pexels-abraham-191284090-12116378.jpg

We’ll begin our immersion with a guided walking tour of Oaxaca’s Historic Center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site bursting with color, history, and cultural energy. As we stroll through its cobblestone streets and grand colonial architecture, we’ll visit landmarks like the Santo Domingo Church, the Zócalo (main plaza), and charming local galleries and courtyards.

Along the way, you’ll hear the stories that shaped Oaxaca—from its indigenous roots to its colonial past—all while practicing Spanish in context and connecting with the sights and sounds around you. After the tour, enjoy free time to explore artisan shops, sip café de olla at a traditional café, or simply take in the vibrant street life.

Monte Albán

We will journey just outside Oaxaca City to Monte Albán, one of the most important and awe-inspiring archaeological sites in Mesoamerica. As we walk among ancient pyramids, ceremonial platforms, and stone carvings, a culture guide will bring the history of the Zapotec civilization to life—offering insight into their language, beliefs, and daily life.

After our guided tour, you'll have time to take in the panoramic views of the Oaxaca Valley, reflect on the magnitude of the site, or capture the moment with photos. This powerful visit offers a chance to connect not only with Mexico’s ancestral past but also with the Spanish language as it weaves through stories of indigenous heritage and cultural identity.

San Bartolo Coyotepec

We’ll take a trip to the artisan village of San Bartolo Coyotepec, renowned for its striking black pottery (barro negro)—a craft passed down through generations of Zapotec families. As we enter the workshop of a local artisan, you’ll witness the entire creative process, from raw clay to the polished, shimmering finish that makes this pottery so iconic.

Through a live demonstration by a master potter, we’ll learn about the traditional techniques, cultural symbolism, and evolution of this art form—all while hearing the stories behind each piece in Spanish. You’ll have time to explore the studio, ask questions, and even shop for one-of-a-kind handcrafted items.

San Martín Tilcajete

We’ll venture into the colorful village of San Martín Tilcajete, home to the fantastical world of alebrijes—hand-carved wooden figures painted in vibrant patterns and rooted in rich indigenous tradition.

In a local workshop, you’ll meet artisan families who have dedicated their lives to this intricate and symbolic craft. As you watch the carving and painting process unfold, you’ll learn about the meaning behind the designs, the role of alebrijes in Oaxacan folklore, and the Spanish vocabulary tied to colors, animals, and creative expression.

You’ll even have the chance to paint your own mini figure or interact with artists in Spanish during a Q&A.
